Question MP3 Quality problems

I have noticed that after switching to the Dopod test rom with GPS, the quality of the sound I got from my mp3's was severely degraded. It had a nice deep bass quality on the old HTC rom when plugged into the aux input on my car stereo. Now on the new rom it sounds like all the low register sounds have been cut out and it sounds really tinny and hollow.

The only other thing I could think of is that I got one of the HTC Y cables for allowing charging and audio out at the same time. I don't know what to blame since I used the new rom and the new cable at the same time.

Could anyone tell me if it is more likely a problem with the rom (is anyone else on the Dopod test rom noticing this) or maybe a connection problem caused by the new Y cable? (it fit rather tight on first plug in)

Any thoughts are much appreciated. Even if it's just to say that you sound quality is fine with the new rom. Regards.

Default same problem

after one week of nice using of the new GPS activated ROM , yesterday evening I noticed the same .
Using my bluetooth stereo headset , I noticed that really the quality has been degraded in comparison with the performance with the origina HTC ROM.

I hope that the next new rom upgrade will fix this point !!!

I agree.

I used the new Dopod ROM with GPS (1.23.707.4).
the sound is completely lacking bass for mp3. it sounds like tin can.

My previous ROM (french 1.15.406.2) was much better in this aspect.

I am thinking downgrading because of that but I would like to keep the GPS so I am wondering if Dopod ROM 1.23.707.2 is OK with mp3.

I also have to add that m4a files (aac) are OK. Plenty of bass for them.
It is strange because if something was wrong with codec only media player would be affected by the problem. tcpmp, coreplayer use their own codec. but yet the problem is also there.

I downgraded to 1.23.707.2.

mp3 problem is still there.

It seems to be less obvious though. But maybe it's just me trying to find differences...

I will use aac (sound is perfect with it) until problem is fixed

I will try to export registry settings and compare with original ROM.

You should add a different poll:

If mp3 quality is indeed degraded, would you choose GPS over better MP3 quality or the opposite?

I converted a couple of my tracks with deeper bass to aac so I could test this theory and found no appreciable difference in quality. It doesn't even sound like the bass is present at all! Maybe I'm doing something wrong with my encoding...but I don't think so. Crossing my fingers for an eventual HTC fix...then this device would be truely perfect IMHO.

@meroupow: Thanks for the suggestion anyway!!!

Just flashed the final Dopod ROM 1.23.707.6.

Still the same problem with mp3 and DIVX files (as sound is mp3...).

Also I am sure that m4a files are fine. I used itunes to convert mp3 and the resulted file has got normal bass and is perfectly fine.

Also for video I use MP4 ASP IPOD profile and the sound is OK.

So I can listen to music and watch videos.
Therefore I will keep the ROM with GPS.

Also I noticed that the sound is much more stronger with the Dopod ROM than my original french ROM.
Here in europe there are laws for music players to limit the max level of sound.
I am very glad to see it's only controlled by software by HTC.

For Ipods I think it's controlled at hardware level and there is nothing to do...
