WM6 Printing / My SiPix is working!
I've been playing with the WM6 Rom's and thought I'd experiment before I had my TyTn fully software loaded. I took out the old SiPix thermal printer and loaded my old Print Pocket CE software from 2002. I could not get the printer to work in WM5 at all. It has a driver for the SiPix along with most other printers these days. First try, the TyTn did not even see the printer. Then I went to http://www.fieldsoftware.com/PrintPocketCE.htm
, and they show a new version that is a free upgrade with previous version ownership. I d/l'd it and loaded the newest version. I read this note on the site.
Note for Windows Mobile 5.0 Pocket PC users:
PrintPocketCE prints Pocket Word .PSW and Pocket Excel .PXL file formats.
Windows Mobile 5.0 Pocket PCs use DOC & XLS file formats which cannot be printed by PrintPocketCE. There are no current plans to add this support into PrintPocketCE.
So, since I use "Spread CE" spreadsheet software for my 8 page expense report (it will not work in WM6 excel mobile). I remembered reading that it allows conversion from xls to .pxl so I saved my expense spreadsheet as .pxl and "Ta Da!" The SiPix printed the spreadsheet just fine. I have found that notepad prints along with .pxl using the PrintPocketCE software from my TyTN to the Sipix. I have really missed the ability to carry a small printer (thermal) as I hand out quotes frequently to customers. I've struggled with portable inkjet printers, which if not used a bunch, seem to have dried up ink when ever I really needed it. This is a huge discovery for me (a traveling gadget freak!) and may just make my life a little easier.
Check out the SiPix, its about the size of a small paperback book, runs on 4 AA batteries, and if you hunt you can also find drivers for WinXP. The SiPix has been selling for less than $20 for a couple of years, so it's dirt cheap if you can find one.
