Talking Upgrading WM6: From one noob to another

These guys in this forum know what they are doing. It pays to be courteous and to follow instructions!

Here's a case in point:

Now I consider myself to be a die-hard techie. I'm the guy other techies turn to to solve their IT problems.

I flashed to The Real Thing last week and was having no end of trouble keeping a signal and having GPRS drop out on me or just refuse to connect. I knew that Faria had strongly recommended flashing to the 2.19 ROM, but I was stubborn on this one. TMo 2.25 had been good to me and I wasn't about to change. I was cursing Faria in my mind (Sorry, Faria. I really do not wish for the fleas of a thousand camels to infest your pubic hair! ). I almost reflashed to the stock ROM.

Well, after missing several calls, emails, and voicemail notifications, I caved and grudgingly flashed to the 2.19 radio only ROM, expecting to be disappointed. Boy, was I WRONG!

My TMobile MDA is back, and it's better than ever! I spent a productive hour in a doctor's office waiting room responding to several emails that came in. I also have a consistent signal in my office where before it was spotty to nil at best. BTW, I'm getting data speeds consistently above 130 kbps with 2-4 bars and around 30 kbps with 1 bar.

A word to the wise...I know we tech types have huge egos. But eat humble pie, search, read and then follow instructions to the letter! You'll sleep better.

Great post and great advice. I'll admit that my first attempt at flashing didn't go so well, and like you I'm a tech geek that people come to for help, so I know what I'm doing (or think I do at least ). Well, my problems all came from taking a short cut (I didn't want to flash the dang TMobile ROM AGAIN ). Caused me nothing but grief when I went straight from AKU 3.3 to WM6 MBE. I wasted probably a day fighting it and then finally decided to start over and flash it again but with a clean TMobile Flash underneath. All my problems disappeared. Yep, eat the humble pie, RTFM and things will go smoother.

So yeah, we get frustrated and may seem heartless and mean in our posts, but its usually for the good of those we are trying to "help"... I think a lot of us have thought we bricked our phone, so we've seen these things, and groan at each of the same posts over and over when the stickies and wiki is there for the taking to try to help people avoid the same situations.
AT&T Tilt

Default Remember, searching is your friend. :)

Right on mfrazzz!

There are many reasons why experienced people say search. Among them:

1. In the process of searching you stumble accross information that helps you put the new information, cab file, tweak, etc. in context.

2. It builds your knowledge base and skill set, making it more likely you'll be able to recover from a catastrophe.

3. It makes you wait and ask whether or not you really want to do what you plan to do.

4. Wading through the information forces you to consider pros and cons.

5. It helps you learn from the mistakes and experiences of others.

At the risk of sounding condescending, would you give a child a loaded gun? No, you wait until that person has grown enough to understand and weigh the consequences. Similarly, searching helps with growth in technical knowledge.

Please feel free to add other reasons.
