Default confusion over cid unlocked devices.

ok, i just want to clarify a couple of things before i go and try an upgrade.

i have o2 uk wm5 xda orbit. from the link below

http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index...temis_Versions

Quote:
ARTE200 O2 UK O2 XDA Orbit UK QWERTY Unlocked OS 5.1.342 (Build 15096.3.0.0) 1.25.206.2 10/04/06 WWE 1.25.206.101 02.67.90 4.1.13.28 Yes
shows that the ROM/device (whichever) is UNLOCKED.

now is this sim unlocked or CID unlocked or does both mean the same, I have tried a Vodafone sim in my device and it worked ok, I want to upgrade to WM6 but i dont want to screw with my device as i use it daily.

can anyone tell me if i have a CID unlocked phone.

cheers guys.

Talking CID Lock V SIM Lock

AFAIK....
CID Lock - means the device is locked to the ROM either by your carrier, if you have a GSM company provided/branded handset (e.g O2, T-Mobile et.c)

SIM Lock - means the service provider will not let you use the handset with another SIM card i.e if SIM Locked, you may not be able to use another service provider SIM on your handset.

I believe O2 now ship their phones SIM UNLOCKED (which is a great thing), therefore you can insert a T-Mobile, Vodafone, Orange et.c SIM into the handset they provided and it would work, however the handsets are CID Locked, so you cannot flash the ROM to another...unless of course you want to try pof's method.

......my 2 cents
There is mothing made by man that cannot be reproduced.

joey jojo, I had the same dilema as you. Only difference is I "bricked" my phone by not planning ahead successfully. The best route I would suggest, from my own painful experience, is to pay the £20 to imei-check and get your Orbit CID unlocked first. That way you can flash away to your hearts content if/when a better ROM comes out.

The mistake I made is I flashed a WM5 HTC ROM using pof's method ( worked like a charm i must add ) to test if it would work. Everything worked OK. Then I went on to flash a WM6 ROM. What I failed to realise is that after the ROM is flashed the CID Lock is back in place and you need to then flash AGAIN with the USPL update before flashing to WM6. I failed to spot this and flashed my Orbit to Brick mode. Thankfully O2 have now repaired it under warranty, I have unlocked it with imei-check and now run BEPE's WM6 ROM with no problems at all. WM6 is SO much fater than WM5.

The choice is yours at the end of the day. Your phone.............hope this helps.

i fail to see how the CID relocked its self... this is unheard of... did you double check the CID unlocking procedure??
