https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/flar2/devcheck-system-info/devcheck-system-info-2-40-release/
Open app, tap System tab
Look for codename like Thor, Ford, Saturn...
Then search for that codename on xda or Google
or

The guides in those forums are not for the 2013 Kindle Fire HD. Because this was never clear, many people bricked their KFSOWIs. I understand the index is for XDA, but all info for rooting KFSOWI is at KFSOWI modding on G+.

Also, the device specs and descriptions for 3rd gen 2013 KFHD are incorrect. There's no camera on the KFSOWI. Amazon's product page here links to the 2012 model (idiots!), so is also linked in your post.

Amazon's correct product page is here (It's misleading though, including HDX models with camera and other features...)

Edit: DoLooper Changes should be done, Thanks

What is a Fastboot Cable
Factory Cable, Fastboot Cable, and Motorola Programing Cable are all the same thing.
The usb cable that came with the device , is just a stock usb data cable.
With a fastboot cable, Power (+) from pin 1, is moved to the normally unused pin 4.
Using a Fastboot Cable forces Some Amazon Fires into Fastboot Mode which will allow Flashing Firmware,

Fastboot Cable Pinout

Motorola Uses
Many Motorola Devices are hardwired to bypass the battery, and power the device directly from pin 4.
"So you flashed your phone and now it thinks the battery is dead (even though it's not) and it won't let you flash it again to fix it? Or, your battery really is dead and you don't have a way to charge it because your phone is soft-bricked and won't charge the battery. What do you do? With this cable you don't even need a battery in your phone." - By Team Black Hat

For Mac: see Can ADB/Fastboot be used on Linux and Mac?

Setting up and using ADB/Fastboot (Android Debugging Bridge)
There are several methods for setting up ADB
  • Using adb.exe from a specific folder, easy method (Windows)
Install adb drivers for your device or try the Generic Adb drivers
    Download newest adb files
    Setup ADB
    • Create a folder in C drive like ADB (c:/adb)
    • Open start menu and type CMD
    • Right click on CMD > select open file location
    • Find cmd.exe, right click and copy
    • Paste cmd.exe into adb folder
    • Move uncompressed adb files to adb folder (AdbWinUsbApi.dll, AdbWinApi.dll, adb.exe, fastboot.exe)
    Using ADB
    • Double click on cmd.exe in adb folder
    • run commands in command prompt that opens
    • some commands to test connection
    Code:
    adb devices
return should be serial # ....................... Device
    Code:
     A000xxxxxxxxx......................Device

  • Booting to recovery
    Code:
    adb reboot recovery

  • Booting to fastboot
    Code:
    adb reboot-bootloader

  • Using Fastboot

Note:
adb commands are for rom and recovery (e.g. adb devices)
fastboot commands are for fastboot/bootloader (e.g. fastboot devices)

Show known File Types if you can not see file extension like .zip
  • Open C:/adb folder
  • Select View>options>Change folder and Search options
  • In Folder Options Select Tab View
  • Uncheck Box: Hide Extensions for Known file Types
  • Select OK

get adb and fastboot files
Boot to Fastboot mode
Test fastboot mode connection by sending this code through command prompt
Code:
fastboot -i 0x1949 getvar product
should get the codename for your device back
ford, THEBES, otter....
also can test with
Code:
fastboot -i 0x1949 devices
you should get Serial # ....... Device/Mode
Code:

This tab sat for several months. I booted up and installed 12.1-201601109-nightly-jem. Google play services requested an update. The message "google play services wont run unless you update google play services" keeps appearing. I updated my services version and it didn't help. I was told to do a force stop, clear cache. That didn't help. Then I was told to remove my google accounts. That didn't help. I think I updated with the incorrect version of services. I was following the instructions fron AndroidPIT.

I would like to start over, but don't know where to begin.

My model is a rooted kindle fire hd 8.9 model number 3HT7G.
My android version is 5.1

Can someone please help?

AWESOME

OP IS AWESOME!

I own several Kindle devices, and have used Shadow's guides in the past... but some how never came across this incredible index! Sometimes when attempting a project on an android device, most of the work is searching through XDA forums, this post is excellent and should be a model for other posts/devices.

This is an incredible resource! Just wanted to post and say bravo sir. :good::good:
