Default 4.5MB of RAM because of microSD card

If i insert microSD card into my phone i loose 4.5MB of RAM! If i remove it i get it back. Can anyone else try this and confirm? What could be the reason for that?

Default 4.5MB of RAM because of microSD

I just tried it and what I lose is 0.82MB (that is, 820k) when I plug in the microSD card. I believe what you lose depends on the format of your microSD card. As in normal PC's, every attached drive takes up some RAM, the RAM size depending on the cluster size of the attached drive. MicroSD and other memory cards are generally factory-formatted to FAT. This is inefficient. As a rule, I always reformat my memory cards to FAT32 before using them. This drastically reduces the cluster size and so makes storage more efficient.

I just tried what you said. After i format my microSD (2GB SanDisk) to FAT32 there is no difference. I still loose 4.5MB.

That's too much!

Did you restart the device after reformating the microSD card?

Yes, i did. I even tried other microSD card (128MB), it's the same.

16MB of free RAM is way to little! And to loose more than 25% of that just by inserting memory card is unbelievable!

do you have the phone set to dump anything onto the card or just as raw storage? something from the factory might be set to check the card, that is definately a new one.

I must say this is an unusual problem. What brand of microSD card do you have? Does it have an auto-encryption/decryption which runs immediately the card is inserted?

SanDisk Ultra II 2GB. I don't know about an auto-encryption/decryption.

Hmm I could see it being the higher speeds that the ultra touts that the phone might not be able to handle? Sounds weird and un likely but this is a very weird issue. However if your other card wasnt Ultra II then that nerfs that idea.

It could be a defect in the hardware itself.
