G4 devices and compatibility with the roms

Hi all,
from little days I have acquired a new uni and to difference of my old g3 this is a g4. I have found some difficulty to understand if some roms were compatible with the g4 or not, I refer is to rom wm5 that to wm6 and wm6.1.
There is a way in order to understand if a rom it is compatible with the g4 devices even if it is not specified from the releaser?
Task is need of clarity in order to avoid to damage our devices flashing incompatible roms.
I would suggest also to add some line on the wiki.
I hope that someone competent gives the right answers.
