problem with rooting g1

i'm trying to root my g1 i've followed the instructions posted on this page http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=442480 but when i use telnet it says "error connecting to sever" null. i don't know what i did wrong i did everything to the letter. if i had to guess i say that i didn't copy it to the sd card root (how do you do this i just drag and drop the recovery.img and update.zip to the memory card) can anyone help o yea im using ubuntu if thats important.

Did you type "telnetd" (without the quotations) before u did that? If not, just simply type it in and press enter, no matter where you are on ur g1 at the moment, then you should be able to do it. (It will probably bring up contacts search)
