Default What Can I Do With Root - INFO

This is some GENERAL info on Rooting and the things it allows you to do with your phone - it draws on info from other ANDROID devices - the G1 and the Magic because there's not much specific stuff for the Hero yet - so this is for you Hero Pioneers to help you get started and save you reinventing the wheel

The Android Wiki here http://android-dls.com/wiki/index.php?title=Main_Page

has a specific section that is great at saying what root does/can do for you
http://android-dls.com/wiki/index.php?title=Why_Root - ESSENTIAL READING!!

This bit here has info on Wifi Tethering - that is using your phone as a modem/server for surfing the web via your phone's data plan.
http://android-dls.com/wiki/index.ph...e=G1_Tethering

This bit here has info on putting/running your apps from SD Card (To save space on the device memory - this was crucial on the G1 as it has about 75mb free for apps, but not such a big issue on magic and hero as they have MUCH more space - here's info anyway that might give you ideas how to do it for the Hero
http://android-dls.com/wiki/index.ph...uro_Apps_to_SD

Other things that root allows include changing ROMS and RECOVERY IMAGES, changing themes, adding and removing files from the main device memory using abd, fastboot or root explorers, enabling bluetooth file transfers and I'm sure there's other stuff too. Google searches or forum searches on XDA will usually bring up some great info. Use that Search function folks!!!

These threads and wiki's are from Android devices that paved the way for devices like Hero - use their knowledge well and keep Android Moving forward!!
G1 - Google Ion - HTC Hero - Milestone - Nexus One - Desire Z - Samsung Galaxy S II currently using Westcrips REMIX 1.1 ICS Rom

one question, why is tethering relevant, considering we can tether without needing root on the hero?

You can tether via USB cable on a stock Hero, but you need a rooted Hero in order to tether via WiFi.

Apps2SD is already included in the new Modaco ROMs as well.

All you need to do is create a partition in EXT3 format on your Micro SD. I did this with a programme called Paragon Partition Manager (XP) but I'm sure there are other options.

Thanks dayzee!!

I'm new to Android and was just about to ask you thus where is a good place to learn some of the fundamentals.

Getting to know Android has been very fun and exciting so far. I'm looking forward to finding out how far I can become capable of pushing this device. I get the feeling my next upgrade will be here before I'm actually ready for it.
