Send long messages as MMS?

Am I missing something? Is there a way to automatically convert long messages (>160 characters) into MMS. I know that adding a subject gets the job done, but having an option to automatically do that would be greatly appreciated.

Android automatically does this once the text gets larger than 3 SMS long.....

to be honest, most people moan about it doing it, but just keep typing and once you get to 480 characters (roughly) you'll see the 'converting to mms' message appear on screen.
