Default radio
is the radio built into this for or is the usb adapter needed?

If you mean the FM radio, yes its stock & working on my Imagio. Just needs head phones for an antenna.

I love how the box and info sheet read; FM Radio (Optional Accessory)
The "optional accessory" is any 3.5mm headphones (for the antenna).
Mine works great. I get more stations on the phone than I do on my home stereo.
