I could be insane, but it appears the Nexus One at least has the hardware capable to run on AT&T 3G.

See my post here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=612950

yes you are insanely, insane! (just kidding!) if this is like the Touch HD, the radio supports other bands (e.g., at&t 3G) but is limited by a (non-user-flashable) firmware. many folks tried for months to find a way to get the HD to work on at&t 3G with no success. (thank goodness Telstra got the HD). of course i would love to be proved wrong on this radio issue..

Non-flash-able firmware doesn't seem to be the kind of problem you would have with a nexus one already being rooted.

i'm talking non-user-flashable firmware; e.g., you need special equipment, etc to complete the flash.

I understand. Well hopefully that's not the case. But I can see why they would make it that way, where certification and who they are marketing too are concerned.

Seems stupid to artificially limit the hardware tho.

i completely agree... they know, however, we'll still buy the phone. which is what i'll be doing and if an at&t version comes later, i'll sell the first one and buy the at&t version. (assuming i'm still with at&t).

Damn straight. I'll do the same.

I may get the contract free plan from T-Mobile for a month and try out the coverage.

I'm quite tired of AT&T being old and slow to do anything useful. If it wasn't for bad experiences with coverage my friends have, I would be at T-Mobile already.

even if it's not "user" flashable if it is found to be something we can take into our local geek and have them flash a ROM chip the old fashion way I"d still be excited. Ethier way my Nexus is coming Friday! I only have a few months on my contract anyway :)
