In my case this steps (simple but not obvious) solved the problem:

1-Open Maps brut version
2-Menu>More>Brut Mod> and disable both read from cache and save to cache
3-Press back (the key with the arrow)
4-You should see maps again
5-Menu>More>Brut Mod> and enable both read from cache and save to cache
6-Press back (the key with the arrow)
7-You should see maps again
8-Exit all apps (and if you want to reboot do it too)
9-See if it's working now

Hope this helps
Nope, this didn't help :( The tiles cached by brut are being grabbed from cache, but the rest of the tiles are being redownloaded. Any other clues?

I just discovered what the problem is with gmapmaker. It is downloading the tiles as JPG files instead of downloading them as PNG images :-S So how on earth can I fix this?!

Well, you used a batch file renamer, why not a batch image converter? I'm sure there's free software to do this. Of course it can work just if the tiles are compatible in other terms...

Me again.

Well, no. I just noticed map tiles are donwloaded as PNGs while Hybrid, Satellite and Terrain are JPGs. Anyway, neither PNGs nor JPGs are being used by Maps [brut] when copied to the SD card after downloading them with gmapmaker.

According to gmapmaker, project is stopped, redirecting you to:
http://www.mgmaps.com/cache/
where you can find this online tool:
http://www.mapcacher.com/

Have you tried that way?

yes, that's where i got gmapmaker from precisely :) the online tool generates a file which you pass to gmapmaker to download the tiles. not working with Maps [brut].
I suspect maybe Maps [brut] has an index file which lists the tiles which have been cached. Since the tiles downloaded with gmapmaker aren't in that index it will redownload them. Could this be it? Hope Brut.all will tell.

No, this algorithm is really simple, I don't use any index.

If you enable debug mode in the menu, you will be able to see in the logcat, where GM searches for tile files.
