Default G1 getting an update to 2.1?

The blogger here seems to think so. Does this mean we can finally look forward to 2.1 ROMs with video?

If US phones get the official update, that'll mean the drivers will be out there, which is really the last barrier to 2.1. AOSP and ADP versions should be able to go international, then.

DONATE TO ME
I hope this is true, would be pretty good news. and then its on to flash, but it's probably not going to happen for the g1s :/. apparently you have to have a armv7 processor like the n1

Are you suggesting that Google couldn't release their own software for their own phones?

Would be nice if he's right for a change!
The "wipe required" part actually sounds interesting.

If his article isn't completely out to lunch (which is a DEFINITE possibility -- he's been known to be very consistently WRONG in the past...), then by the sounds of it, this update will involve REPARTITIONING!!!! Which is the only reason for requiring a "pc based install" vs. an OTA update.

Just a note though.... we actually HAVE THE DRIVERS!!!
From a HERO dump.
The CPU's are virtually identical (for all practical purposes).
The only issue is in certain changes that may be required as a result of RADIO FIRMWARE and/or KERNEL changes.

Nothing that isn't doable

Agreed. The lack of storage space was one of the reasons I heard tossed around for why the G1 couldn't be upgraded further. Now, if they did away with the space reserved for OTA updates...

Say WHAT now? Is that true? I feel like the technical challenges might be pretty daunting...

Its true.
I used the ROGERS CANADA hardware/firmware to compare, since they sell (or used to..) a 32A (magic) and a 32B (dream). Note that HERO (all GSM) is a 32A, and tmobile branded magic is a 32B.

A binary comparison between the hardware drivers for rogers 32A and 32B yields ZERO DIFFERENCES... the drivers are IDENTICAL. But that doesn't mean that the drivers are immediately compatible across all devices.... there are differences in the RADIO FIRMWARES between different devices (i.e. HERO and ADP1) that require KERNEL changes in order for the drivers to be compatible.

The good news is that we HAVE all the kernel sources thanks to GPL!!!!

And then, of course, we have our first 2.1 32B ROM thanks to Case_ ... read this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=640744
--- check the link in that thread and read it, has a part about "porting package for 32B" -- 32B means DREAM.

This is the relevant entry: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...1&postcount=17
