UC Browser - The Censored Chinese webbrowser on Android Market. Potential Spyware?
I just tried using this software. It is currently only in Simplified Chinese.
All traffic is routed through China Telecom servers in Beijing, after doing an IP check from the phone. From what we know of China, does anyone else think that this is a major security and privacy threat for users of this app?
On the same principle that Google is pulling out of China, should this app be pulled? Is it spyware? It's one thing for Opera Mini do this, but China Telecom? I downloaded this app from the Canadian market. While this app would pertain to Chinese laws, it has no such guarantees for users outside of China and should therefore not be an accessible app for anyone outside of China. It boils down to 'do you trust the Chinese government with your internet usage'.
On the other hand...
It is one of the most popular browsers in China though. With it's servers located exclusively in China, this browser is the Chinese equivalent of Opera Mini. It has lots of features for browsing popular webpages and forums. It also has an extensive interface. It is quite a bit slower than the stock browser in Canada, but I presume that it is very good in China.
