Default Question about android 2.1 update

Hello. I've finnaly bought an HTC magic , and happens that i've bought from Vodafone. I'm interested in knowing how may i make the update on the HTC website since it always tells me that the serial is not valid. Also i'm interested on to root the device, but i would like to know the advantages and disavantages.

I already know how to root, by the gold card method, i've got already everything prepared. I just liked to know the advantages.

I'm very interested on android 2.1. I know there'll be an update to that version. But i would like to know if there is a way of updating it from HTC vodafone edition .

I've already read alot, and sorry if i prefer to ask, seems easier but i'm kind of lost. Thank you everyone for the help!!

Regards

I like rooting cause you get to theme, I love theming it for fun. Also get to do things that other phones can't do, um you can use a way better rom than the one you have. My Stock Rom was horrible. If I played a game, my battery would be gone in no time. Other Roms here help out with problems like that and you can go from 1.5 to 2.1 which is nice. I also love things people give out here, for example: I recently tried out a keyboard app which had almost every feature and I could basically customize it to my liking. You just have to root, and use your phone and learn it to really enjoy what it is. I have yet to make a rom! Just don't be like the ppl who come here, beg and ask how to root the damn phone, and just install a rom. That's no fun lol.

I also wouldn't upgrade from Vodafone or any carrier. Here where I am, Rogers totally locked ours out. You may end up with a locked SPL or soemthing, you can most likely get the same thing here or better thanks to the devs.

i went all over again, according to all tutorials, perfect SPL must use the gold card method. So i used the gold card method (again and i started the making of gold card all over again)!

i putted the sappimg.zip in the gold card.

I restart in Hboot mode, he finds the sappimg.zip and a blue bar appers as loading onthe right.

After is checking the img gives an error saying, Update Failed! Main version is older Failed updated.

Do you know whats this about? Thank you!
