Notepad App with handwriting anywhere?

Had a windows 6.1 phone and found it useful for writing notes with the on the screen for shopping lists etc

Now have an Acer Liquid with android and cant find an app that accepts handwriting on the screen

Tried a few but cant seem to write on the screen with a sharp pointer or pen - the only thing that seems to work is writing with a finger which is useless for it is too large to write a list etc

Can anyone point me in the right direction or is it impossible due to the Acer screen?
