Default New Member, some root & upgrade questions

Hi:

I found this forum via another (android forums) and I have a few questions, ones I asked there but wasn't settled with the answer.

I have an eris 1.5 i want to root. I got the android sdk & installed it no problem, i have the PB00IMG zip, as well as the recovery zip, all in one root script 0 3, eris15rooted, eris21official-root as well as Aloysius_204-signed and DVanilla2fast.

I've followed all the steps laid out but stop just short of rooting because some things i'm just not clear on.

it's 1.5 now, i'd like to root it & remain at 1.5 and try it out for a bit. but from what i read on the other forum it seems that if i do root it I must upgrade to 2.1, is this true ?

So lets say I do go to 2.1. Do i need to install 2.1 & then dvanilla2fast or aloysius on top of that or are they in themselves someones special custom 2.1 versions and i need only install them ?

And relying on the knowledge here, how do i know i have the latest versions of the files needed AND what is the best and/or most recommended install ? because i see there are various 2.1's floating around.

thanks for your patience

I'm not an expert at any of this.. just sharing what i have learned.
2.1 is great, I don't look back at 1.5 at ALL.

To go to 2.1 root you have everything you need.
the B00IMG zip, as well as the recovery zip, then the all in one root script.
From there load up the eris21official-root.zip

Setup your google account, any other e-mails etc..
then reboot your phone into recovery mode. (Vol up + power)
Go to Backup/Restore > Backup NAND

That's your base point as to what you compare all other roms to.
To go back to it: Just do a Factory Data wipe and a Davlik wipe.
Then Restore the NAND backup.

Every time you try out a new rom, or go back to an old via nandroid backup.. you need to wipe the Factory data and Davlik.

Play around.. you'll get it

Actually this is a very active forum, and full of knowledge, these guys know their stuff, I think if you had checked the development section you would have got a quicker response.....but welcome to the forum.....and know that if you have a problem, most likely someone here knows a fix for it, or will help find a fix....

Just be sure to use the search function before asking simple questions. The odds that someone else already asked your question are pretty good, and the devs don't like repeating themselves and would rather spend time making fun new stuff.

The only way I know of to OBTAIN root is to do the 2.1 Upgrage. However, there is a 2.1 -> 1.5 root thread in the development section.
