Default Questions about "Rooting" and Firmware upgrade (2.1)?

Hey i have an HTC Magic with 1.5 firmware and HTC sense.. (Supplied by HTC, --> Updated to 1.5 from some older version a month ago..)

But i wanna to update it to the latest 2.1 firmware.. So i have read that it should be rooted first, and after that i should install custom 2.1 firmware.

But i'm unsure about the following:

- If i update it to 2.1 Is the "Look" then the same as the HTC legend?
- Is HTC Sense also included in the 2.1 firmware updates?
- Is everything working / and are stable in the 2.1 custom firmware? Or is it beta, and it's possible for the phone to crash or to become unstable?
- What firmware is recomended, if i wanna stick with "HTC Standard" firmware look (So it looks like the HTC legend, HTC Desire - etc etc)
- What about the language of the phone, is "Custom" 2.1 firmwares forced to English? Or can i choose my native language? (Danish)

Is there any disadvantages swithching to the "custom 2.1" firmware instead of running on the "Supplied" v. 1.5?

If iupgrade, is it then possible to revert back to my current "state" = No rooting + stock Firmware 1.5?

1. Yes, if rom is based on legend or have similar theme to it.
2. If it's rom based on HTC firmware - yes
3. Every custom rom is beta, because it's hard to make everything very stable and work smooth. I think 2.1 roms are stable enough to use them every day but there may be a little problem with speed with some roms.
4. I use smoki 0.3 but I think older version is better - more things are working, speed is almost the same. For me, this rom works even faster than official 1.5 + sense ui.
5. I think most roms are multilauguage.
6. You lose warranty and you can brick your phone.
7. Everything is possible, but you need to know how to do that

Allright.. So the procedure i'm going to do is like the following:

1 - Root my phone? Where should i look, 10 different methods / and versions, are described all over the net...

2 - Backup my current ROM, and settings, so i can restore? Where should i look here?

3 - Install new Rom - Where i wan't the HTC Sense, and V. 2.1 android. What would you recommend? I have heard some ROM's is using a lot of power and drains the battery... I don't wan't a rom like that. Further more i would like a rom that's fast and stable... There are really MANY ROM's around on the net, what to pick?

Is this order correct? And could you please answer the 1,2 and 3, to guide me in the right direction...

Once again, your suggestions should match my phone version (As i have read there should be different models, and using wrong roms etc, could break the phone...)

I can really recommend you to read the wiki for the magic. It gave me what I needed to start and will give you the basic insight in what you deal with. On top of that I think that 1.76.09 is difficult to work with, here you have to follow the threads that deal with breaking that..

Don't do that... speak of things you don't know of, like calling every custom rom beta, yet turn around and say that eclair roms are stable enough (its the other way around at this point, a donut 1.6 rom is going to be more stable than eclair, especially for newer devices that came with donut).

And to the OP, if you're using an HTC Magic 32A and it shipped with Android 1.5, then there's a very good chance you can do a one-click-rooting method. Details can be found here in this full 32A upgrade guide for Cyanogenmod which is a very solid custom rom (latest donut version is 4.2.15.1 which is stable, the latest experimental eclair rom from cyanogenmod is 5.0.7-Test3)

http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.ph...to_CyanogenMod

But in a nutshell

-Rooting (ie: new SPL, preferably engineering, new recovery rom etc)
-Rom (can be flashed form recovery)

009 might be a "perfected" SPL which means you may have to use the goldcard method in order to flash an engineering SPL (such as xx.2005) onto the device. And Remember Triple-Read instructions and verify they are for your exact device, people brick their phones too easily cuz they don't read, and I usually avoid trying to upgrade the radio.
TMobile G2 (HTC Desire-Z)
ROM: Andromadus Slim Bean b6 [4.2.2] Recovery: 4EXT Recovery Touch 1.0.0.5 RC9 [b92]
2GB SD-EXT + 96MB DataSwap enabled via DataSwap/SD-EXT/SD-SWAP Enabler

Nexus 4 16GB
ROM: SlimBean -Mako- 6.5-WEEKLY
Kernel: Bricked Recovery: TWRP 2.5.0.0

Nexus 7 16GB
ROM: SlimBean -grouper- 6.5-WEEKLY
Kernel: Bricked Recovery TWRP 2.5.0.0

Sry XDA peep I'm gonna switch over to another language for thsi post:

Okay kan se du er dansker!

1: Her er en guide til at opnå root med den SPL og Radio du har:
http://www.rootyourmagic32a.blogspot...htc-magic.html
