Default WIFI Tethering

I have done some searching and tried several free apps and can not get this to work. I am trying to tether wirelessly my Tilt with Polymod 2.1g to a new Eken M001 android tablet. Has anyone gotten this to work?

Default root required for WIFI tether

All of the apps incl barnicle need ROOT to work. 2.1 is not rooted, so it seems either return to 1.6 (like Myns warm donut) or wait for 2.2. There seems to be a hack for the other devices that involves loading a rooted 2.0 and using a custom upgrade to 2.1 but nothing for the hacked roms for Kaiser and the like. I need this infrequently so now to decide do I return to 1.6 just for that.

Lightbulb android wired tether

I'm running incubus's super fast eclair and have installed easytether (free version) on my computer and phone. and also installed android-wired-tether. it disconnects when downloading files sometimes but running the two apps together while in recovery mode has been my best success so far.

How is 2.1 not rooted then? i thought our versions were, and if not we could make them rooted.
