going to check out another rom and see what happens . . .
Ok, one last idea: Using Teppic74's downgrade guide, try get your Desire back to original. So, in other words back to how it was when you first received it...
If at this point (with everything original and stock) it still doesn't work, then it's most likely a hardware issue and you should send it in for repairs. Is it still within it's warranty period?
Alternatively, if everything works correctly while on stock, get the official Froyo update (2.2) for your device. That should also upgrade your HBOOT (bootloader) from 0.80 to 0.93. At which point, root it using AlphaRev and create a nandroid backup (you'll be grateful for this later, trust me).
If these don't help, then I'm afraid I've hit the end of my useful period... I have no idea what else to suggest.
I have stock 2.2 rom on HTC desire .I have rooted it .
Can I update the radio to 5.17.05.23 ? .Is there any compatibility chart ,saying only certain OS (like 2.2 or 2.3) ,should only use the respective radios ?
Can the lastest radio be used with stock 2.2 rom ?
Also is the following procedure also correct ?
1. Download the radio to your SD card.
2. Turn off the phone fully,
3. Hold down VolDown key and press the power button once. Keep on holding the VolDown.
4. When you see the white screen, let go.
5. Wait for a few seconds .. usually count to 7 would work.
6. Scroll down to 'recovery' using the VolDown VolUp keys. Select using power button.
7. You get to the black page, with a few lines of text. Now start using your optical pad.
8. Go to "Install zip from sdcard".
9. Navigate and select the zip.
10. Accept and flash.
11. Phone will restart a few of times, then you will come back and boot up again with your new radio.
There is no compatibility chart. You should have no problems if your radio and ril are compatible, no matter what os you use. That said, Froyo roms presumably have older rils and 5.17.05.23 is the newest radio image.
That procedure is right for someone with stock partition layout, yes.
just S-OFF with Revolutionary.io when trying to install the radio, the install Clockwork Recovery says that the update script in the Radio zip file is out of date and cancels.

What other way can the Radio be installed?
ta
You don't need to be S-Off for flashing radios via recovery, however if you flashed a hboot (which can only be done while S-Off) with a small /cache-partition, you can't flash the radio via recovery. In this case you need to extract the .img from the zip-file and flash this img-file via fastboot. And you can only use fastboot when S-Off.
tl;dr: If you changed you hboot, use fastboot or android flasher, if you didn't, flash the zip via recovery. If you are S-Off but didn't change your hboot, you can go both ways but flashing via fastboot/android flasher is a bit safer than recovery, I think.
And "when trying to install the radio, the install Clockwork Recovery says that the update script in the Radio zip file is out of date and cancels." is wrong.
I wouldn't recommend to mess around with rils. In my eyes it screws up more than it helps. In fact, I think it doesn't help at all, so I'd keep my fingers away from rils.
Maybe the Recovery installed by Revolutionary version of ClockworkRecovery doesn't like the provide update script.
I am still on Stock HBOOT.
Anyway i was trying the FASTBOOT method, but i was still trying this whilst the current stock ROM was running. once i did the VOL DOWN+PWR at repeated the command at the bootscreen it installed the Radio fine.
any command ended up using were
adb reboot bootloader
fastboot flash radio radio.img

afair clockworkmod-recovery >3.xx need a different script and doesn't work with old scripts. But this is a update-script-or clockworkmorkmod-issue, not a the-radio-is-too-old-issue.
That's btw. the reason I use Amon Ra-Recovery. I've never had a problem with update-scripts. Actually I've never had any problem with this recovery
Edit: regarding radio versions. 4.xx are Eclair-, 5.xx are Froyo or Gingerbread Radios. Apart from that you can use any radio you want. Its more down to you specific carrier, so just try different radios and see which works best in your case.
