Things before flash

Ok, Im kinda sure Im gonna flash my phone soon (never done it before), as abyzou is getting better and better all the time!
So I got few questions, before flashing...

1. Which is best guide, on how to do that?
2. Whats that "RA" what ppl use?
3. Best way to save ur contact info (with pics)/sms, and other info whats saved on ur phone not SD card?

4. Any other Tips I should look at before/while flashing my phone?

2. RA, is the Custom Recovery image from Amon_RA: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=649276
3. Install MyBackupPro for backing up SMS and Contacts and stuff to SD...Yesterday I tried Titanium Backup and it's not very user-friendly...don't know how to backup SMS there...Oo
4. Always do a Nandroid backup first before flashing you are able to do this when u installed custom Recovery
