Default Screen died, manufacturer defect?

Hey, Last night I was texting with my phone. I closed the keyboard, and the screen didn't flip to portrait mode. I opened it and closed it again and it remained frozen. Then it dimmed, and the screen was consumed by red green blue and white lines. I did a soft reset and the phone turned on, but only a dim light emanated from the screen, no picture whatsoever. The phone did boot completely, I heard a text message come in, pressing buttons made the appropriate tone. I used no custom roms, nor did I get it wet.

Does this sound like a manufacturer defect? Is there a history of this happening?

It sounds like what happens when there is a connection problem between the lcd and the motherboard. If your mobile has warranty, then bring it in. The connections are a press fit type thing, and in my opinion very poor engineering. If you have nothing to lose, then find the dissassembly videos and make sure the connections are being made. Do a search for the "Microp Error". At least I think that is what it is called.
There are some hints there, I believe.

for starters it sounds like you have a pro, not a diamond.
the pro has a problem with chafing of the ribbon cable as it passes through the slider mech.
the cable conductors become exposed and short across the screen mount plate causing the display to lose colors or go blank.
