I got it to work, and have root on my phone.

For all the rebooting to try and get the device to show, I pulled the back cover and was pulling and reinserting the battery to reboot.

1. pull battery
2. hold vol down
3. insert battery

rinse and repeat until you get the offline device.

So... should we still see clockwork mod after we reboot or not so much? and YAY IT WORKS!

Installed root explorer and overclock widget.

Only 600MHz at the top end... needs a new kernel... but still awesome!!! WE HAVE ROOT!!!!

Would it be possible for someone to make a youtube video of the rooting process?
~*I had an HD2, hence my user name then went to a mytouch 3g slide, and a Nexus One, but now currently using a Samsung Vibrant!*~

Hey Eugene, I was wondering if you knew possible why everytime I do boot into Recovery, the loop catches the offline device for a little bit, but when it's hitting the actually black recovery screen with the phone, it drops the offline device.

I've rebooted many many many times now and its the same thing, even restarted Terminal. Any ideas?

Default to those who got root working...

Just to clear some things up...

Step 6.
Once Recovery Loads, You should Have an Offline Device ( ctrl+c ) to See.
If Not, Power Off and Try again..
I saw it say my serial and that it was off line... but after three or so lines of command in the loop it goes away... it NEEDS to stay there? and then you can move to the next step?

Default One more report of success on a Mac

Yep, it took about a dozen reboots to work on my Mac, but it eventually happened. Here are the steps I followed, starting with the phone on. (You don't have to power off beforehand.)
  1. Get Eugene's zipfile. (Duh)
  2. Create loop.sh to scan for the device in your SDK/tools folder.
    Code:
    #!/bin/sh
    while [ 1 ]; do ./adb devices; done
  3. chmod 755 loop.sh
  4. From your SDK/tools directory, run:
  5. ./adb reboot recovery
  6. ./loop.sh
  7. If the output of loop.sh isn't either "offline" or "recovery" (e.g. no device is shown after it's finished booting into recovery), press Volume-Up and Power to get the menu, then Power to reboot. Then repeat the reboot and loop. (You can run ./adb reboot recovery as soon as the MyTouch screen comes up after reboot, you don't have to wait for the desktop.)
  8. If you end up in "offline" mode, unplug USB and plug it back in. If you end up in "recovery", you're set to go.
  9. Hit Volume-Up + Power to get the menu, then follow Eugene's instructions from Step 8 (Apply update.zip).

I had to do the reboot/loop about a dozen times before I ended up with a connection, so don't be discouraged if it takes a bit.
