How I got great battery life (with pictorial evidence!).
First off, I would just like to state that I did not use any sort of task-killer or ever even kill any apps that were already running. The ONLY app that I used to affect my battery life was Autostarts
. This is not a task-killer, because it does not run in the background and kill apps that are already running. It simply changes WHEN apps are allowed to start by changing the permission on them. You can even use it to disable when system apps are allowed to run. The interface is extremely simple: It lists the conditionals for when apps start themselves typically (i.e. text received, screen turned off) and shows you all of the apps set to start at those times. You can then disable all of the apps you want.
I was able to get the best battery life that I had ever gotten using this app and the latest DamageControl 3.2 ROM. After over 14 hours of pretty moderate use I had 44% remaining. To me, that is the best battery life I have gotten on any smartphone (average discharge rate of 3.86%/hour
compared with 5.0%/hour on the BlackBerry Tour, which had the second-best battery life). The discharge rate was also fairly constant. It didn't randomly burn like crazy any time I used the phone. I had actually been using the Fresh Evo .3 ROM before this, but I was getting awake time issues. Even when I would close all of the apps that started on boot something would still keep the phone awake (I'm guessing something that re-started itself all the time). I was able to clearly monitor the battery life using SystemPanel App
. I installed DC and Autostarts Wednesday afternoon. You can see the results for yourself below. The top is a battery level, the middle is awake time, and the bottom is CPU activity.
On these last two pics, take a look at the CPU usage and how I had to charge Fresh throughout the day.
