Apple In Ear Headphones w/ Remote & Mic

I use these headphones with my iPod Touch, and would do the same with my phone. However, I can only hear the song properly on my phone if I push down the middle button of the remote. Does anybody know how to fix this?

Also, if I use the ones that came with the phone, and I plug them into my iPod, the same thing happens and I have to hold the silver button.

Short answer:

Despite the same plug style they are NOT interchangeable. Samsung and SE headsets seem to work with either or without this problem, but not Apple.
