Changing home screen text

Hi guys,

Does anyone know if it's possible to some how change the text on the home screens?

For example, instead of the text with the ugly black round border thing around it, would it be possible to say have the text with a drop shadow instead?

Also a way to change the font too

Does nobody know how to do this?

Surly with Android being open source this should be possible?
