Default Can you backup your firmware using Odin before rooting/flashing?

I am going to get my Galaxy S tomorrow and before I consider rooting/flashing it, I want to know if it is possible to create something like a recovery image of the phone's firmware and settings so I can restore everything if necessary. Is it possible to do this with Odin or adb?

I've been looking for an answer to this question. No one's answered it in any of the threads I've found where it's asked, nor in the one I created: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=762104

ODIN has a Dump option on it and I'm hoping these will work. Specifically they are "AP RAM" and "AP NAND."
Can ODIN create a useable backup?

Can someone please answer this? Would be very appreciated.

I dumped my nand, but I could never work out how to put it back personally. So I'm interested too

I was wondering how long took you to dump your NAND and how big is the dump file.
