1.Open ODIN. (And close Kies, if you have it open. It is important to have ODIN open BEFORE connection the phone via USB!)
2.Select the PDA/Modem/CSC/.PIT files in Odin. (For kernel flashes, only PDA is required. For FW flashes, .PIT and at least a PDA is required. Some PDAs have Modem and CSC integrated. Make sure you have the correct .PIT file. Usually 512.pit)
3.Check the "Re-Partition" checkbox.
4.Turn the phone into the download mode by pressing and holding VolumeDown+Home+Power.
5.Connect your phone with your computer and wait until the drivers are installed.
6.When the drivers are installed, click Start.
7.The phone will be flashed and once it’s finished, it will boot up. (Do NOT disconnect the usb-cable, remove the battery or otherwise interrupt this process!)
8.You have successfully flashed your phone.

Personally I used the 512.PIT with Repartition NOT checked.

Did you unzip it or anything? It should be in the .zip format for it to work. If you unzip it you may break its signature.

Are you sure it's just update.zip and not update.zip.zip? Windows doesn't usually display file extensions, so make sure it's update.zip and try.

How long do you wait for the bootup? the phone can just sit there in download mode and do nothing else, even when the flashing has finished. is it normal to unplug it and hold the power key until it reboots?

Your phone should reboot after a successful flash if you have the "Auto Reboot" checked. So maybe you didn't check that box. I really don't know what would happen if you don't because I've never tried unchecking it :P

I'd say do a reboot and see what you get. If your firmware's flashed then no worries. If it isn't then do a reflash.

Auto Reboot is checked by default and if the flash was successful then your phone will reboot.

If you unchecked auto reboot (it is on by default), then yes, that result is completely normal. Improvisation is NOT needed with any of the tutorials.

Please note that on the current version of the SDK the path for ADB is in fact "android-sdk-windows\platform-tools".
Cheers,

Hi i'm new with my SGS and a bit confused in one thing...
At the moment my device is running FROYO.XXJPU - got it rooted fine.

Now the most ROM's are based on XXJPY / XWJS3.
I failed several time to install XXJPY / XWJS3 from samfirmeware.com

Do I have to compine the CSC and Modem from my XXJPU Firmware Archive but take the PDA from XWJS3 or JPY?

Or is it not possible to update my XXJPU?

I tried this with the newest FW and now whenever I boot I get a black screen with vibrates every few minutes. When I go into boot mode(vol-up + home+power) I get the message

E: Can't mount /dev/block/stl10
(invalid argument)
E: coppy_dbdata_media: Can't mount DBDATA)

This also came up right after the flash was finished.

Help!?

Help!?
Using the files from this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=818556

Kind of fixed my problem I think. The phone now reboots twice and performs some update-yellow-text-mumbo-jumbo.

I have no idea what went wrong when I used the files i the OP.
