I did find out, though, that Handbrake won't convert embedded subs on MKV files.

I watch anime and a lot of it is hardsubbed in MKV format (no separate .ass or .srt files). I found the free version of Any Video Converter works well for the hardsubbed videos.
I use a program called "OJO Soft Total Video Converter" and it also puts the subs from HD/Blu Ray rips into the movies as well.

I use the MP4 setting of "Apple TV - Highest Reolution @ 24fps - (H.264, 1280*720, 3000kbps).
I just set it to keep the Original Frame Rate and change the audio to something like 128k or 192k with a format of "MPEG2/4 AAC-CL".

I have done a few movies like this and it works great. Audio is spot on and it looks about as good as Avatar. Very happy with this phones video playback capabilities.

Does this also convert protected movie files? Not many DVDs work with Handbreak since they can't have encryption...

I use DVD Decrypter to remove the protection, although I am not sure if I am choosing the correct file type in sources. Testing the .vob file output from decrypter to see if that works however I am not sure if the sound file will be attached.

Will see, 6 hours left will update tomorrow.

Default problems with Handbreak

I tried using Handbreak as described to convert DVDs that I own. I ran into a couple of issues.

First I tried doing the higher video settings (like 800x600) but it won't allow me to go above the standard 720x480. So how does one get the higher quality video settings

Second problem I ran into is that some of my discs it sees as copy right protected and won't convert (I own the DVDs so its not illegal)

Third I was finally able to kick it off with Transformers but 1.64% into the conversion process it crashes. tried restarting 2-3 times with the same issue.

Can you point out where I may be going wrong? Also if there are other software pieces out there that work better the I'm willing to try them also.

Thank you in advance

for around $40 you can get AnyDVD from Slysoft, it runs as a wedge between your PC / DVD drive / and software, makes all the discs appear to be "Unencrypted"

It is worth it for backing up movies you own, use it to archive to my Media Center as well ...

I also use dvd fab to remove copy protection from the movies I own and copy them to my pc. Its free. I use dvd shrink (also free) to compress the files to fit on a single layer dvd for playback on my dvd player. Dvd shrink makes multiple 1 gig .vob files to put on the dvd (works best most of the time for some reason). You can change some settings in dvd shrink to make only 1 .vob file. Then I run that file through handbrake.

I've just converted and transferred 4 movies to my epic using handbrake but haven't sat down to really watch them yet. There seems to be lots of screen real estate not being used. Maybe I need to change some of the settings recommended previously.

I also have a 3rd gen ipod touch and have noticed it shows the names of the movies next to the screenshot before selecting one to watch. How do I do this on the epic(show the name of the movie)?

Thanks!

Hi everyone,

I've tried converting the movie for Galaxy S by Handbreak. The converted movie works perfectly.

But I think that we should have a lil bit modification for these values:

Resolution : 1280*720p (by doing so, we may playback the movie on 32' LCD sometimes via cable). If one of the sizes is bigger than 1280 or 720, seem ur Galaxy S won't play it, and the screen will turn to black.

Birate: I choose 3000 for better quality

Any suggestion? Thanks!
