Default How do I "Root" an Android

Excuse me if in the wrong context.

I am running Darkstone's V1 Froyo build. Running sweet however trying to get the torch to work.

What is rooting?

How do I tell it the phone is rooted?

How would I go about rooting the phone?

Darkstone's Froyo build comes rooted already, the problem is that the torch app wont work because the LED Flash isnt working in this build.
