miztaken, this didn't used to be the case, hence the differentiation. But truth be told, corruption is unlikely, the suggestion to make a backup copy is a CYOA deal.

Default i figured it out ...dumb mistake

thanks but yea i backed it up just in case but i figured it out right after i posted in the thread...it just clicked that i tried to open it from "my files" folder instead of the root explorer app which i guess is dumb of me but i'm learning ..so once i opened it on the root explorer everything worked fine.... its my first time learning so i'm still allowed dumb mistakes right? lol

I had to use a hybrid of methods 1 and 2, but it worked like a charm!
Moved settings.db to sd card with root explorer, used the last part of method 1 to edit settings.db with sqlite3, used root explorer to copy updated settings.db back to original location. Rebooted and installed non-market app.

Thanks OP!

Can anyone confirm whether Method #2 works with Froyo 2.2 or not?

Thanks.

THank you for this!!! Method 2 worked really well! All of the other ones that require code to be typed makes my eyes bleed! Thank you again!

Default Not Working for Me

Hey guys, I'm not a noob to command line and unix in general, but I'm having a lot of trouble. I got sqlite3 onto my phone and it works fine. I'm running this command:

# sqlite3 /dbdata/databases/com.android.providers.settings/settings.db <<EOF
update secure set value = 1 where name = 'install_non_market_apps';
EOF
> > #
# reboot

the sqlite3 command returns without any output, and reboot reboots fine. Sadly after I reboot, I still don't have the option to enable apps from unknown sources in Settings->Menu->Applications. What am I doing wrong here?

Try this method, much easier.

That method would be completely easy if I was on a windows machine.

I'll try that when I get home, but everything I did seems to be correct, so I'm curious what went wrong and why I still don't have access.

You seem to have misunderstood. This process does not change the settings menu so you can see anything. It simply enables the process.
