Default No access Android Market?

Well it would seem the work around to access the Android Market on the i858 no longer works. At least i-mobile techies are not able to do it - anymore. They used to be able to, now they can't do it either.

There have been a stack of i858s returned in Chiang Mai and forwarded to Bangkok.

My guess is the phone will no longer be able to access the market - possibly Google got fed up with manufacturers pirating the software and figured out a way to stop it - permanently.

The only question that remains now is what form of compensation may be forthcoming for those of us sold a phone, marketed as having access to the Android Market, that no longer has access?

Anyone else here just a little pissed?

You can access the market. Root the phone and delete marketupdater.apk. Then go into settings>applications and uninstall the market updates. Now your market won't update any more and you will be back to the market the phone shipped with (or the version on the current rom). You jus won't have the new fancy market, but you will have your market access back.

It is not an issue of Google blocking access. It is an issue of the new market app is not compatible with the i858. Since the i858 is not licensed by Google for Google Apps they don't support it and couldn't care less if the new market runs on it or not. That's what happens when you buy an off-brand Android device. In the future only buy brand names that are members of the Open Handset Alliance who have been licensed to put Google Apps on their devices.

Default did as you said

I did as you suggested 3 times before taking the phone to i-mobile in Chiang Mai. The front desk personnel did as you suggested. Still wouldn't work. They took it to the techie in the back, he couldn't get it to work. They pulled out another i858 and a newer android phone they have. The market was accessible on the newer android but not their i858.

A few days ago I went to see when my phone might be returned and if they had heard anything from Bangkok. I was shown a stack of receipts for i858s that had been returned since mine came in. None of them can access the market even after doing factory resets and disabling the market updater.

Something has changed since your original advice. Because I did as you suggested before and things worked fine. Until the phone eventually crashed again, and I needed to do another factory reset. Disabled the market updater as before but the market won't appear like before.

That phone is old (in Android years - similar to dog years) and you should think about getting a new phone. It cannot play any of the new games due to the not having a GPU also. I am surprised they are taking them back so long after the warranty has expired. If you can get them to return your money you can get a new phone lightyears ahead in tech specs for the same price as when the i858 was new.

Something about what you said above makes no sense. If you had deleted the marketupdater.apk doing a factory reset would not bring it back. The system partition is untouched by a factory reset. It sounds like you might have disabled or removed the market app (vending.apk) itself. If you did that then there certainly would be no market as the app is no longer there. The old market app will definitely work. Sounds like you mucked up something in the system preventing the market from working.

And I-Mobile doesn't have any "techies." They have some bumbling fools in the back room that really have no idea what they are doing when it comes to Android devices.

Sorry for the ROM I mention last post. Still testing something.

By the way I found Source code from another PXA935 device, the Dell Aero.
