Default [Q] Newbie entering dangerous territory

Hi Folks

I have a Vodafone V1615 aka TYTN II which has Voda WM 6.1 - CE OS 5.2.19212 (build 19212.1.0.3). I think it's a great smartphone but the UI is a bit blah... So I believe I could use an app and a downloaded cab file and flash the rom to get to a generic 6.5, and then get a very groovy 2d or 3d TouchFlo app so I can pretend like I'm not going through a mid life crisis (but failing....) which sounds like an idea,

Now then, I'm kinda techie but terrified of frying the box so while I understand the concepts I don't get the "how to" elements. Therefore an idiot's step-by-step guide on would be hugely appreciated

so questions -

(a) What benefit is there of a generic 6.5 over voda 6.1?
(b) Which app to do the flash, and how? (the order to avoid a brick etc.)
(c) Which Cab/s for the rom? (and ditto)
(d) Which Cab/s for the TouchFlo?
(e) Will my Tom Tom apps still work?

Ta

Phil

Maybe you should use the search button
Device: HTC Kaiser, stock unbranded
Android Froyo CyanogenMod6 Kaiser [RLS5.2] on NAND/NAND

Hiya Phil

I was in a similar position to yourself around 2 weeks ago and am thus no expert in the field of rom flashing there are however a host of resources out there to help nub cakes such as ourselves. Ill try and answer your questions as best I can with links to resources which I found particularly helpful.

a. From what I understand there are no generic (not user created) roms for the HTC TYTN II. Should you want to use 6.5 you would thus need to make use of a rom designed by one of the many chefs in the community. Concerning differences w w w . 1 8 0 0 p o c k e t p c . c o m / 2 0 0 9 / 0 2 / 1 3 / d I f f e r e n c e – b e t w e e n – w I n d o w s – m o b I l e – 6 5 – a n d – 6 1 . h t m l provides a brief outline. The main difference in my own opinion is that 6.5 is more finger friendly with 6.1 being more stylus dependant.

b. When it comes to flashing mskip has written an excellent guide covering the entire process forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=433835 including the installation of Hard spl, Unlocking, Flashing Rom, Flashing Radio. Initially it seems a bit much however once you’ve read through it a few times it becomes clearer.

c. Answered in b.

d. Some of the user created roms will already have TouchFlo aka Manila cooked into them. Should the rom you choose not have it cooked in you can install forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=425851 which contains a link to a cab file.

e. The process of flashing will remove all data from your device and you would thus need to reinstall any app such as TomTom. Speaking from personal experience the reinstallation of TomTom was not an issue at all setting up the GPS again was slightly more of a challenge, however with some tweaking and time I’ve managed to get it working on the various roms I’ve tried.

As I stated at the start I’m by no means a pro at the whole process so be sure to read through the links and the links within the links they offer considerable more insight than I can offer. I would post direct links however due to the nature of my account I’m not permitted

Best of luck in flashing your rom
