Kies connection issue caused by defective data cable?

I found that in some forum some ppl claimed that changing data cable solved the connection issue.

doesn't sound plausible since copying file worked fine, while kies continues to have problems.

I'm running into this issue now. I purchased a Vibrant from ebay but the seller gave me an LG data cable and it doesn't work at all. Just charges.

not sure if this is relevant but the i9000 I bought had a defective cable. You had to hold it in position for it to work (at all) however charging with power adapter was fine. Using another cable was also fine

(very much relieved to find out the cable was at fault not the actual socket on the phone!!!)
