Basically here is where I am at:

Won't turn on. Charge LED won't come on. Is this as bad as I think?

I got in way over my head, and I'm desperate. Where do I start?

A good place to start would be for you to tell us exactly what you've done so far that got you to this point. It's really hard to say if something's bricked without knowing that -- could be or could not be. However, that does sound suspiciously bricklike.
