Easily close programs?

I've been wondering if there is a way to close most programs with a button or menu. On my old BB Bold most programs had a menu->exit command or you could hold the escape key down for several seconds. Is there anything like this for apps like the browser or media player or am I doomed to using ATK for such a simple task? I don't like how the media player doesn't have a stop button and the music is just paused into the background when I want to close it. One other thing, how do I chose which browser window to open when I have multiple tabs open already?
