Is 3G data used when GPS in use?

My GPS does not work unless 3G data or wi-fi (in short internet is on) enabled. I get the lock pretty fast if 3G data or wi-fi enabled. If I turn them off I keep getting message data connection lost.

Does anyone else has this problem?

This is supposed to be that way, data connection is used to get the map or any other thing you are trying to get. GPS just give your position, not the images.
