Question Cannot change language in i9000 (may have been dishonestly sold a i9000)

Dear all,

Today I received my first Android 'phone, but sadly I suspect that I have been ripped off. I know that this is not a Android development related question, but I cannot think of anywhere else to ask, and searching the web yielded no results.

The company sold me one that has the language in Portuguese, which is a sham because I am the Netherlands. The company is in the Netherlands as well. ( studentenmobile.nl).

Is it possible to change the language, at least into English?

I cannot work the 'phone at present because I don't understand what is written, at all Nor do I know where to go. I think that English might be available on it because there were two instruction booklets: One in English and one in Portuguese, but this does not mean that any language other than Portuguese is available.

I would be grateful for any help.

PS. No, the company won't take it back, because I they did not state that the 'phone language was not in Dutch, nor that it was in Dutch. The same for English. Stupid of me not to ask.

On my phone change the language here:

On the main screen, press the menu button.

Press the 'gear' - this is settings in english.

Then you are in the settings list. The 10th line on my phone has a white square with a black A in it. It is called 'Locate and text'.

Tap that, and the topmost option is 'Select locale'. Tap that.

Now a list pof countries appears. It should have 'Nederlands' written there.

BUT I think the phone would have done that the moment it noticed a Dutch SIM card. Perhaps it doesn't with some pre paid cards.

If the phone does not offer 'Nederlands' you have indeed been cheated, and the company should arrange for an exchange or return of money.

Do not fall for the normal right of return, as they can hold on your money for 30 days, but insist on a quicker solution as this product is broken, as it does not conform to what a Dutch buyer expects.

A steady wave of relief has just passed through my head (although perceived as being centred in the chest).

I have changed the language. There is a pretty long list of languages there. Although I read Nederlands (NL) and Nederlands (Belgie), yet there was only French (FR) and French (CH), which is strange. I expected it to also have French (BE).

Anyway, thanks a million.

I did not have a SIM card in it, which is why it did not take the language settings from it.
