Wow! It worked!

I found the poster's first file on the official T-Mobile forums and, since I now have a spare MyTouch 3G (G2 FTW!), I figured I'll try it out.

Renamed 894fb8631db9.hboot-1.33.0013.opal.zip to update.zip and placed it into the root of my SD card. Rebooted into recovery and flashed it. The process restarted the phone a few times (DO NOT TOUCH THE THING ONCE YOU START THE FLASH!!!!!) and eventually booted into 1.6.

I rebooted into fastboot and saw HBOOT was now 1.33.0013 :D

I then took e059adc603a3.signed-opal-ota-60505.e059adc6.zip and renamed it to update.zip and put it into the root of the SD card deleting the previous file. Repeated the same steps as before and the phone did the whole restart itself a few times thing and eventually booted to 2.2!!!

Great work guys!

EDIT: I just realized the first file linked is NOT the HBOOT update (read a bit too fast). Here is the link I got from the TMobile forums for the HBOOT update that IS NEEDED for the 2.2 update to work:

Anyone else confirms that this works?

Can whoever confirms also state the exact order w/ links of where they downloaded and which goes first.

right now I'm build DMD64 of the old MyTouch 3g.

EDIT:

I can confirm that this definitely works. The link given by smapdl is indeed the correct HBOOT that is needed for part 2 of the update. Part 2 I just grabbed from the the OP link of part 2. Now I have Froyo goodness complete with USB tethering, Froyo a2sd, chrome to phone, blah blah. Build FRG83 from DMD64

The only thing that sucks now is that Universal Androot doesn't work at the moment. And may never work because of perfected SPL? <<I don't believe that will last long.

Im running chromatic 4.5..and i got a text from tmobile saying "Free T-Mobile MSG: Over the next two weeks, a 2 part Froyo Android OS upgrade will be sent to your myTouch 3G. Details: www.t-mobile.com/myTouch-MR"

Could i still get the update while rooted? Or i have to unroot...or will it automatically unroot it because of the tmobile update???

And if anybody got this message before the official OTA, how long before the update was sent to you?

I was rooted with Universal Androot. Even though I did it manually, you can still get the update that way since with Universal you still have the original kernel, but updating to the official froyo system will wipe out root privileges. Custom roms use custom kernels so if that's the case then no you will not get the update in that way. This is to my understanding.

The only thing I note is missing so far is the New and Weather app. The new youtube app is sick, I love the new UI. You have to download it from the market though. But yeah tethering, apps 2 sd, multiple google accounts, it's all here. Of course we don't have flash and I believe we didn't get the JIT compiler. I could be wrong though. It's responsive none the less.

But if you want to keep root access for your phone then search the XDA forums for CM6remix. It's a cross between the official and CM6. There's a video on youtube for it too. Search youtube for MyTouch 3G Official T-mobile Android 2.2 Froyo Update

EDIT: There is no live wallpaper support for the OTA
