Default Question regarding performance of Galaxy S...

I don't have a Samsung Galaxy S anymore, i now have an HTC Desire HD, however i do have a thought to possibly run past current owners right now - i'm namely talking about the Galaxy S i9000 however if this applies to the US variants like Captivate, Fascinate, Vibrant etc then fair do's...

The main reason for switching from the Galaxy S to the HTC Desire HD was that the Samsung Galaxy S was so SLOW - god awfully slow (So much so that i reverted back to my BlackBerry Bold whilst waiting on my Desire HD being delivered)

Upon receiving my Desire HD with no SD Card inserted, it ran amazingly smooth and fast however when loading in a SanDisk Class 2 16gb microSD Card, it was slow whilst preparing the SD Card however it then remained slow after it had done the necessary preparations. (So i initially thought it was a problem with the SD Card)

However, after searching through a couple of forums courtesy of Google Search i found that by going through Menu -> Settings -> Applications -> Development and then enabling/checking USB Debugging, this increased the speed immensely to the point where there is NO lag at all...

...which made me then think "Did i do that on the Samsung Galaxy S?" because if i didn't i may have got rid of the phone for nothing!! Can any SGS owners verify if this works or makes an improvement at all?

How could this possibly make a difference, but then what do I know. I was under the impression that this function was to prevent annoying messages from popping up on the screen when connecting to your PC and not much else. I have given it a go and what do you know, it does seem to be an improvement. Don't get me wrong, I did not suffer from much of a lag issue in the first place, but I have noticed that when running a couple of applications like pyramid solitaire I need to flush the memory first with task manager or the animations are a bit laggy. I will continue to use the phone in de-bug mode and see if it is maybe just a placebo.

I thought the same as well however i found the below info from the Vodafone eForum: -

Something to do with the /INIT process which was slowing things down so i don't know if "maybe" the same issue was affecting the SGS possibly...

Very interesting article TP86, I have been trying to make the phone laggy since applying the debug mode, but so far it is still super quick. I have opened the web browser, market place and a few other apps. This should grind pyramid solitaire to a stuttering halt, but I can confirm that it is most definitely not. I am going to switch debug mode off and see what happens

Sgs scores 1000 in quadrant...desire hd around 1800. All about software. Samsung must hire some good devs:)

Lag issue u are talking about on DHD is related to /init process eating up 90+% CPU usage. Enabling USB debug fixes it and /init process goes back to normal (0% CPU usage) and your phone is fast again.

Cause of SGS lag is different so USB debugging wont increase performance. You could always use lagfixes tho (basically thats why i still have my SGS even though i had chance to exchange it for DHD).

I hear what you are saying and you sound like you know what you are talking about, but have you given it a go? Mine has definitely improved using debug mode.

Yes i had a DHD for 2 days , its a good phone, everything is working out of the box , no need to flash custom roms (not that there were any last time i checked) and stuff like that to get it working properly (apart from enabling debug mode hehe ) and its pretty fast especially compared to SGS

Its just I like SGS a bit more, mostly because of things like S-AMOLED screen, size and weight, far better multimedia support (mkv, 720p etc), gpu, and bunch of others.
Yeah stock samsung firmwares are crap, lag is pretty bad when you have lot of stuff installed but if you dont mind flashing custom ROMs i think most of those issues can be fixed or at least made acceptable.

But it really comes down to personal preference, both are good phones , each with its pros and cons.

Thanks for the tip. I'll try using this as well, let's just hope that the battery life doesn't take a hit.
