Default Archos 101: So far with 2.2: Disaster Blaster

There are a lot of fine folks over at Archosfans forums, so I do not intend this at their expense, but if you ever wanted to compare to another device and feel a LOT better about your device purchase, just browse the forums right now.

Seems they would all be best to reset their devices and start from scratch, but as stands now:

1. Flash works poorly
2. Adobe Reader chokes
3. 236mb of app space (was supposed to be increased, so when they get that update- they WILL have to start from scratch)
4. About 72mb of free ram
5. Slow UI
6. Build concerns
7. About half our current Quadrant scores (900 vs 1800)

Either Archos released a stinker rom, or all users need to reset and start from scratch. Even with 256mb ram, they should not be having these problems (except perhaps the ram issue, to some degree).

2.1 worked well on the device, so must be one of the two items (bad rom or reset needed).

I've always thought 2.2 was in beta for archos 101/70.

The GTab is far from perfect, but I have come to the conclusion that I would have been very unhappy with the Archos 101. It has an excellent media player and the screen is not flipped like ours, but man everything else about it would have bugged me.

It's funny hearing us complain about 1800 Quandrant scores, when the 101 gets HALF that. Ouch.

Default Reset?

So you are saying best to do a factory reset? Will that bring back to 2.1 or will 2.2 be on? If you could explain briefly what that will do and then what I would do, to try and get working faster and better overall performance, unless of course, it is a bad rom.

Thanks

Try a reset with 2.2 on it now. The process should clear cache and data, while keeping only the OS and stock roms.

Catch is all user installed apps and settings will need to be redone. This of course assumes Archos packages work like most others do.

Does the Advent Vega churn out ~2400 Quadrant scores w/ their latest rom/drivers? Anyone know? Since that driver pack roebeet packed into the experimental rom was originally from the Vega, correct?
Rhodium AT&T GSM.

I was on the gtab/101 fence. I found the 101 first and was all set to buy but then found the gtab. I'm happy I left the 101.

Good point, that 's why in my thread in HKEPC, Archos 101 really have a really low price performance ratio.
I actually saw that engineering unit with 2.2 back in Sept., to tell you the truth, the current release does not really show that much different with that.
This is nothing more than a glorified MP4

Seems the 101 may have kernel issues also affecting, for 2.2 not to help and even hurt performance. Number one bottleneck with 2.1 and lower is the Dalvik byte code layer. Even with 256mb ram, the 101 should be better with 2.2, since the byte code layer is about 5X better.
