Default Phone feature

I remember on the nexus one there was this feature to where if you put the phone up to your ear to talk the screen would shut off, is this feature on the nexus s and what is is called? Thanks

Yes it is, its built into Android i believe...its part of the Ambient light detection

That would be the proximity sensor on the front next to the ambient light sensor.
