I tried to do it with Tasker, but it can only turn off data completely and not turn down to 2G. Any ideas?

U should try an app called cpu tuner. Be sure to be rooted so u can take full advantage of this app. You can set all kinds of power saving profiles.

Unfortunately, Android does not support an automatic toggle between 3G and 2D so, until now, this is not possible.

Best regards,
Martin

I have 3g Widget that I got from the market that seems to do what you're looking for.

Thx, but this app diables the complete data transfer only. I was looking for an automated switching between 2G and 3G to use the low bandwidth 2G data for push services while the screen is turned off.

Best regards,
martin
