Default About to buy a nexus s, few questions please

I'm a vibrant owner atm, I'm about to but a nexus s. I have a few questions please.

Is it worth 500$?

And I'm buying it from a friend who doesn't like it so what type of tests and things should I do to make sure there are no problems and everything works?

Thanks

I am a former Vibrant owner who now has a Nexus S. This is the way I see it:

Pro Nexus S
-FFC
-Back camera flash
-Little to no lag
-Fast Android updates from Google
-Working GPS
-Not as must "bloatware", although Google installed as many Google apps as they could get their hands on
-NFC

Pro Vibrant
-TouchWiz (I find myself missing TouchWiz launcher and those minute changes Samsung made to improve upon Vanilla)
-Touchkey arrangements (I find the Nexus S key arrangements to be retarded)
-Gorilla glass
-MicroSD slot
-Extra $300 in my pocket
-Accessories are out
-Dealing with T-Mobile (for exchanges/problems) is a lot easier than BestBuy/Samsung

Myths
-Nexus S has better battery life. In my experience, battery life is about the same between both phones.
-Curved display is terrible. After owning the Nexus S for about a week, I can say curve display makes little to no difference; you may even forget it is there.

Final verdict: Extra $300 I paid for this phone (after selling my Vibrant)... worth it? Eh, I am still trying to figure that out. Is Nexus S a kick-ass phone? Hell yeah.

How do I check those? I appreciate it.

Also one more question, if I'm using a sim from a company other than t mobile do I still get ota updates? Cuz on my vibrant I've never got a ota update and I'm not with t mobile

You can get a Tab with that money. You already have one decent phone ;)

My vote goes for Vibrant. Nero rom with voodoo and gingerbread theme makes ton of difference. FFC can also be installed on Vibrant, I just don't use it.

The reason why u didn't get any updates on Vibrant is because there were none yet from Samsung directly.
Going from n1 to ns is an upgrade, but from vibrant its a waste of money.

It's definitely worth every penny. It's a great phone.

Retired: Motorola Droid 1. You're old and broken now, but you served me well.
Side phone (no service): Nexus S running MIUI.
Main phone: Galaxy Nexus on Verizon. Great phone, hands down.
Tablet: 32GB White Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, big thanks to Android Central.

Rooting your Nexus S on Linux? This can help!

How do I check to make sure every thing works and specific tests you recommend?
