I'd suggest using an ubuntu bootable CD for now... It's a good enough OS to use till you get up and running, though from CD it's a little slow, naturally, until it's all loaded into RAM.
For viruses, you should be able to remove them all using an offline scanner (ie. one that runs from another OS, like ClamWin, or a bootable rescue disc).
Most AV providers give a free rescue disc to boot to that will run their package and remove the viruses, even though you're not a customer. They hope that you'll then buy the app to protect your PC without the hassle of rebooting into a bootable CD and updating it to use it.
See http://www.askvg.com/download-free-b...and-others/for a list of them.
I'd suggest trying Kaspersky first, then something like ESET...
Burn the ISO to a CD, then you can boot it and try to clean up the PC.
