Default Cameraless Droid Pro

Back in October there were a few rumors floating about about a cameraless droid pro becoming available. I currently have a business account with 13 iden hybrid phones with Sprint, and we've been thinking about moving over to Verizon. The job sites we work on do allow cell phones, but strictly disallow cameras, so we can't just buy camera phones and disable them in software. Cameraless droid pro phones would be ideal for us, as there is no other cameraless Android phone.

I've already called Verizon, and they don't seem to know.

Has anyone else heard of any ETA on these, or if they'll be available at all?

I wouldn't hold your breath and don't know where you were hearing that from. Any high end, mid end or even low end cell phone these days includes a camera or two.

You could simply open the phone and remove the camera sensor.

May I ask what field of work this is?

We're a contractor that works frequently in a shipyard that builds aircraft carriers and submarines, so cameras simply aren't allowed anywhere on site.

This is the source of the rumors:

It's been reposted on many blogs.

I did get in contact with Motorola and they have no information, not that Verizon would let them disclose it anyway.

If they really want to target RIM with this phone they need to produce a cameraless version. Pretty much all of the blackberries are available sans camera, and plenty of people in the defense industry use them.

I thought about just removing the camera modules, but wouldn't that leave a hole in the back of the phone? Or is there a lens protector on the battery cover?

Yes there is a lens cover that is placed on the battery cover / door. I have rarely seen a blackberry without a camera that wasn't custom produced for an environment like the one you mentioned. Even blackberries from 3 years ago have cameras.

Although this phone is near perfect, physical keyboard, touch screen and an Android OS, the battery life is pretty weak unless you're using the extended battery and cover that can be purchased from Verizon stores.

From what I understand Blackberry phones are easily available without cameras. Look at Verizon's site, and select Blackberry smartphones. The 9650 is available without a camera and can be on your doorstep tomorrow. Sprint also sells a cameraless 9650, and it can be ordered right now. If Motorola doesn't step up, I'll probably just order one of those.

I don't see one being released any time soon. I doubt Motorola is in a position to start producing phones without a camera as they attempt to capture as much market share as they can.

A smart phone without a camera is not on the minds of average consumers.

I looked up the extended battery and cover, and it looks like there is just a hole for the camera, and no clear plastic lens cover built into the battery door. Can anyone confirm an actual clear lens cover on battery door, extended or otherwise? I'll have to stop by a store and check it out in person. If there's a clear lens cover, I could get these, disassemble them, remove the camera module and paint over the back of the lens cover.

Yes there is a plastic back to the battery cover. Here's a photo of the front and back of the phone. As you can see there is a plastic lens cover on the back plastic snap-in.

Do you actually own one of these or are you just speculating? From all the pics I've seen, the camera/lens cover is part of the camera, or the back of the phone itself. I believe the battery door only has a big hole in it for that to poke through.

I remember reading it on engadget.

Apparenty, their was a screenshot of inventory stating a cameraless droid pro for business users.

I haven't read anything else on it after lol

I do know BB makes cameraless phones. They're all over the tmo and sprint stores. Don't know about verizon since I'm never near a verizon store for some reason lol
