Unhappy [Q] Bricked GT540 HELP!

So looks like I've maybe bricked my fiancées GT540... Needless to say she's not too happy.
I was doing an update to 2.1 via the LG software, and it seems to have crashed half way through, leaving the phone in no-mans land.
I can get it in to "Download Mode" but not much more after that.
There are instructions for a Hard Reset, by holding down volume up, home and search or camera button for 5 seconds, but they don't work.
The LG software is now "Checking the connection with the cellphone..."
I've tried taking the batter out, the SIM card, the SD card, still no joy.
I really can't afford to be going out tomorrow for a new phone for her, so i'd like some help!
The most annoying thing is that I managed to update my GT540 a couple of hours earlier today...

So after rebooting the PC, and having the phone in "Download mode" it's now showing up on the LG software as "Connected", but now when it says "updating is not possible any longer due to a fatal error while the LG Mobile Phone Software Update"
When it's connected and not in "Download Mode" it give an error "Software update is not supported for this model"

Thanks for that link.
I still don't seem to be having much luck.
I've tried on a PC running windows 7 and it seems to crash when running that update. just trying it again on an XP machine.
Any other advice?
I've tried calling LG, but they said it would be best to take it to their repair centre, who I can't seem to get hold of...

Thanks for that
I've tried this. Holding those buttons down for 30+ seconds, and it won't move from the "Download Mode" screen.
Trying to use the method outlined in the link above, but i'm having trouble with that as well... Now it's saying that the PC can't find the phone

Disable the android modem driver in the device manager .Open the KDZ updater and try to update it in CS EMERGENCY mode.
