Unhappy [REQ] Starter Guide for n00bs

Hi all!

I am a new user here. And though i have been poring over the whole LG P500 section, i as a newbie, have not been able to find any linear pattern for starters.

It would be very helpful for newbies like me if ya all Devs can make a repository where one can find

How-To's for modding phone and using different ROM's.
What to do when you first get ur phone.
Important apps.
Tips and Tricks

Etc.

Thanks in advance!

each rom for p500 pretty much has a comprehensive guide on how to install, first things first is you need to have a custom recovery for your device, after that all customizations and roms will follow.

One quick note, dont upgrade your Optimus to the latest firmware (2.2.1) if you want to try out the different mods on this thread, otherwise your go on a slight detour.

My Learning Curve was

1. Custom Recovery

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=844483

2. AmberHome (first ever ROM i Tried)
3. AmberHome with JIT and Overclock on custom Kernel

AmberHome
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=853625

Custom Kernel for Overclock
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=866774

4. Megatron/Minitron
5. Prime

All infos are pretty much here on this section, just need to piece them all out.

just my two cents

1. Root your phone
(google z4root or superoneclick)
why: gives you a deeper access to your phone; allows unbranding as well as installing some useful applications that require root such as titanium backup or adfree. it is also needed for flashing the custom recovery.

2. Flash custom recovery
(look for a sticky of it in this section)
why: allows you to backup and restore your system files. serves as plan b in case you mess up. needed for flashing roms.

3. Flash a ROM
a) AmberHome - 2.2, first ROM
b) Megatron - 2.2, performance-oriented ROM
c) Prime - 2.2.1, stability-oriented ROM
d) Void - 2.2, customizable ROM (modules)
why: faster and snappier than your stock ROM, might also have out of the box useful features for some like apps2sd.

4. Learn about: KDZ, Overclock, ADB, etc.
(navigate in this section)
