Default Jpa, Jpd, Jpo... How do I determine mine?

Hi. I'm still a beginner, but I believe these 3-letter codes mean something like a region where the phone comes from. Why are they important? If I can easily flash darky's rom with no need to worry about region, why do I have to do that when trying to download Swype, for example?

And how do I determine the region code (if that's what it is) of my phone?

Thanks in advance! If it has been said before, excuse me and please send a link to a post explaining that. I haven't found anything which would explain that thoroughly.

Ok, and what is this used for?

I mean, what would happen if I my phone had, say, JPO code, and I would install Swype for JPY phones? Would it not install? Or is it simply recommended to install software dedicated for one's region code?
